Autumn Budget 2024

  1. Home
  2. Autumn Budget 2024
Today, Rachel Reeves presented her first Budget, marking a historic occasion as the first Budget delivered by a female Chancellor. She focused on Labour’s bold plans to address the UK’s finances and invest in infrastructure across health, education, housing, and transport.

Key funding will comes from increased taxes, including a significant rise in Employers’ National Insurance contributions. Additional tax changes include higher rates of capital gains tax, adjustments to inheritance tax, and VAT on private school fees.

“Rather than ‘fix the roof while the sun is shining’, the Chancellor intends to ‘fix the foundations’ and to ‘invest, invest, invest’.”

Alastair McQuater, Partner, Corporate Tax

The Budget raises significant amounts to fund the government’s plans for long-term economic growth, but the test will be whether these changes lead to meaningful improvements in people’s lives.

Many of our clients will be concerned about the potential impact on their financial plans and how to prepare for upcoming changes. If you have any questions about how the Budget may affect your specific circumstances, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

The Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (Amendment) Regulations 2022 will come into force on 1st

October 2022.

From that date, all relevant landlords must:

– ensure that at least one smoke alarm is equipped on each storey of their homes where there is a room used as living accommodation. This has been a legal requirement in the private rented sector since 2015;

– ensure that a carbon monoxide alarm is equipped in any room used as living accommodation which contains a fixed combustion appliance (excluding gas cookers); and

– ensure that faulty smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are repaired or replaced. The requirements are enforced by local authorities, which can impose a fine of up to £5,000 where a landlord fails to comply with a remedial notice.

To all members,

When your smoke or heat detector starts to bleep, DO NOT DISARM it, change the batteries immediately.

As you can see from the above notice, there will a £5000.00 fine coming into place from the 1st of October 2022.

Your co-operation in the matter is appreciated.
