| I am deeply saddened by the news of the Air India crash on 12 June which tragically claimed the lives of several victims with ties to the Brent Gujarati community.
Brent is one of the most diverse boroughs in the UK, and with strong connections to the region, it is not lost on me that there are local families who have been directly impacted by this tragedy. I cannot imagine the pain and sorrow they are experiencing.
We held a touching Vigil at the Civic Centre in Wembley last night, and it was incredibly heartening to see how many members of the community took the time to come and link arms with the victims and their families.
The Brent Indian Association has opened a condolence book at the front of their headquarters (116 Ealing Rd, Wembley HA0 4TH). The council has also opened books of condolences at its libraries in Brent Civic Centre and on Ealing Road and Kingsbury.
On behalf of everyone in Brent, I extend my heartfelt condolences to all those affected, and to the families who have lost loved ones. We share in the collective grief and extend our thoughts and prayers to you and your loved ones at this time.

Brent partners with leading think tank to tackle gambling

| Gambling reform is needed. This week, we announced we’re teaming up with the Social Market Foundation, leading cross-party think tank, to explore how local authorities can be better empowered to tackle gambling-related harm on Britain’s high streets.
As gambling premises rise Brent Council has rallied local leaders up and down the country behind our campaign that asks the government to remove the “aim to permit” – a rule which currently makes it hard for councils like Brent to refuse gambling license applications. |

Low Pollution Routes to schools

| A ground-breaking initiative, funded by government department Defra, has mapped out a number of low pollution walking routes for 93 schools across the borough.
The intiative has been marked by a new mural in Harlesden. Hand-painted by artist Zoe Alleyne from Bud Studio and developed through workshops with pupils and local community groups, the artwork celebrates clean air and active travel.

Jobseekers will be able to meet with employers in retail, construction, tech, travel, health and hospitality industries and in some cases, apply for roles on the spot.
Brent Works, the council’s employment service and partners will also be on hand to provide one-to-one personalised career advice, and there will be inspiring development workshops running throughout the day. |
