In Brent, our strength has always come from the way that neighbours look out for one another. Through good times, and in times of challenge, this strength embodies the essence of a strong community.

One way that the council supports this community spirit is by funding your brilliant ideas – ideas for projects or events that bring neighbours together and improve the lives of local people.

That’s why I am delighted to share that we’ve relaunched and reopened the Love Where You Live grant, this is a fantastic opportunity to bring your brilliant ideas to life.

You can look to apply from £1000 for individuals and up to £15,000 for two or more groups working together for each project.

If you have an idea, this grant pot offers up to £15,000 to help you bring it to life. I can’t wait to see what ideas you come up with in this round.

Don’t forget that our Community Skips are back! They’re a great way to clear out clutter for free, but more than that, they bring people together. Neighbours have been swapping items and some groups have even organised litter-picking during the event.

Major crackdown on unlicensed landlords

Enforcement officers hit the streets in a major crackdown on unlicensed landlords.

They went door-to-door, tackling unlicensed rentals, offering waste and safety advice, and responding to residents’ concerns about anti-social behaviour.

By law, all landlords in Brent must have a licence – with some very limited exceptions. Unlicensed landlords can be fined up to £30,000.

£5 Million for Major Alperton Station Accessibility Overhaul

Commuters and day-trippers who use Alperton Underground Station are set to benefit from a major upgrade, with Brent Council announcing a £5 million funding injection towards full step-free access and other improvements.

Transport for London’s plans promise to respect the station’s historic character and include new lifts for step-free access, more ticket gates to ease overcrowding, and upgraded, accessible facilities, including baby changing. They anticipate the work will be complete by Summer 2027.

Minister praises support for parents

The Minister of State for Employment, Alison McGovern, visited Brent’s Family Wellbeing Centre in Harlesden last month.

Brent’s eight Family Wellbeing Centres provide a wide range of support, including access to Citizens Advice, food parcels and vouchers, information on feeding your family on a budget, and fun activities for families.

The Minister commented “It’s glaringly obvious that families need more help and solidarity, and Brent is an outlier in having Family Wellbeing Centres to support families who are struggling.”

New Mayor of Brent

At 26, Councillor Ryan Hack has become Brent’s youngest ever Mayor, after being elected as the Borough’s First Citizen at the council’s Annual General Meeting.

Cllr Hack, who represents Brondesbury Park, has taken over the role from outgoing mayor Councillor Tariq Dar MBE.

During his year term, the Mayor will support the Brent Irish Advisory Service (BIAS) as his chosen charity. BIAS aims to improve the well-being of the Irish community across North London and beyond.

Did you know that Brent’s Full Council meetings give an opportunity for local residents to submit questions for response by a Cabinet Member?

If you would like to ask a question at our next Full Council meeting on 7 July 2025.

Any questions will need to be with us by 5pm on Friday 13 June 2025. You’ll receive a written response and will also have the opportunity to ask a follow-up question at the meeting itself.

Whilst this meeting will be held in person, members of the public interested in following proceedings on the night will be able to do so via the Council’s Live Stream pages.

Last chance to have your say on plans to license HMOs in Brent

We’ve published plans which we believe will improve living conditions in private rented homes – but we’d like to hear your views.

If approved, landlords will be required to have a licence to rent out smaller Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) – properties shared by three or more people from two or more households, who share toilet, washing, or cooking facilities. This is similar to the current licensing rules for larger HMOs occupied by five or more people.
In order to get a licence, these properties must meet certain standards, enabling the council to carry on tackling issues like mould, damp and safety.
