| Last week, we intensified our “Don’t Mess with Brent” campaign by showcasing the consequences for vehicles involved in illegal rubbish dumping. This initiative is part of our ongoing efforts to maintain clean and safe streets in Brent.
The Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Steve Reed MP, joined us to crush a van that had been left on the streets of Brent.
Ministers chose to work with Brent as they announced new powers designed to help local councils crack down on flytipping, because of our zero-tolerance approach.
Under the plans, anyone caught dumping waste illegally will now also face up to five years in prison. We will continue to deploy enforcement officers and issue heavy fines against those guilty of offences. This is a significant increase in the penalties which goes to reflect the seriousness of the crime and the impact it has on our communities.
We need the support of our community to stop those who are ruining our streets with their rubbish. If you spot someone fly-tipping, please make a report.
Together, we can make Brent a cleaner, safer, and more pleasant place to live for everyone.

A Day Out at Wembley Park in 1924

| In 1924, Wembley Park hosted the British Empire Exhibition, a huge “theme park” showing off Britain’s Arts, Industry and Engineering and giving millions of visitors the chance to see the people and products from over 50 nations around the world, which were part of what was then seen as the British Empire.
As Becoming Brent commemorates the centenary of the event join Philip Grant from Wembley History Society, and experience a one day tour (from a 1924 guide book) round the exhibition, in pictures and from the comfort of your library seat.

Raising standards for renters 🏠

| A consultation about proposals aimed at improving living conditions in private rented homes has been extended to 10 June!
If the proposals go forward, landlords would be required to have a licence in order to rent out a “house in multiple occupation” (HMOs) – that means, properties that are shared by three or more unrelated people, who form more than one household, and who share toilet, washing or cooking facilities.
In order to get a license, these properties would have to meet certain standards, enabling the council to carry on tackling issues like mould and damp, as well as safety.
We want to hear from everyone – whether you’re a renter, landlord, letting agent or neighbour. You are also welcome to discuss the proposals with our officers on the following dates:

Bridge Park – consultation closing soon

| We’re consulting on proposals to close Bridge Park Community Leisure Centre this summer, in order to make way for a new state-of-the-art Community Leisure Centre.
This is all part of a wider plan to transform the local area, which could see £600million invested along the Hillside Corridor in Stonebridge over the coming years.

Free vouchers for reusable nappies

| A new partnership with Real Nappies for London is giving Brent families the chance to claim a £50 reusable nappy voucher.
Switching to reusable nappies can save families around £772 over 2 and a half years. That is without mentioning the huge benefits it has on the environment, as it focuses on reusing rather than throwing away single use nappies which are filled with lots of single use plastics.
Parents and carers with a baby under 18 months (or under 5 years with a disability requiring nappies), can apply for a nappy voucher worth £50 to help with the upfront cost of buying reusable nappies, or put towards a trial paid-for laundry service. |
